"I'm too drowsy for The Chaperone", I quipped.
It was Friday night at the end of a long week, and I feared falling asleep during the production of The Drowsy Chaperone at Zach Theatre. As medicine for sleepiness, this fabulous musical couldn't be beat; I was on the edge of my seat.
This show centers around The Man in the Chair and his "number one fan" status of the fictitious musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. The musical springs to life in his imagination as The Man in the Chair lives a play-by-play of the scenes that unfold before the audience. From singing to tap-dancing to acting and with fantastic accompaniment from a live orchestra, the musical deserves top-notch ratings.
The story surrounds the bride-to-be as she declares in hilarious fashion that she will not miss stardom even as her very actions suggest she will. Add in a somewhat bumbling groom, two stereotypical but lovable "hit men" and the drowsy (err, inebriated) chaperone, and a host of 23 total characters, and you've got the makings for something special, and that is precisely what The Drowsy Chaperone is. This is a must-see among local Austin theater events, and I will add that is the best musical I have ever seen on the small stage.
